According to Matthew 28:19,20 we believe our Lord has commanded the church to:
1. Make disciples
2. Baptize them
3. Teach them all things
A disciple is one who firstly has a personal faith relationship with Jesus, and trusts completely in the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross and through His grace seeks to walk in His footsteps. This relationship is nurtured through prayer and bible study, fellowship, and witnessing and ministry. A decided change will be seen in the life, that will give evidence that God has given you a new heart. Jesus is not only Saviour, but He want to be Lord of our lives as well.
What does it mean to be a disciple living in the time shortly before Jesus returns? The Books of Daniel and Revelation in the Holy Scriptures, reveal how Christ imparts His Victory to the church in the end-time struggle against Satan. There are tremendous Prophecies inscribed in these books that help prepare all who choose to believe in Jesus, to be ready for His Second Coming.
Once you become a disciple of Jesus, He calls you to make a public stand for Him. Baptism is a powerful symbol of the Gospel. It symbolises the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. When we are baptised we symbolically die to sin, and are born again as new creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
The journey does not end however. When you become a member of an Adventist family, opportunities for growth and nurture are provided for you to deepen your understanding of God’s Word, and to grow in your discipleship experience with Jesus. Even when we stumble and fall, Jesus promises that, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”(1 John 1:9).
